As an AT in the Dartmouth German Studies Program you are an essential participant in a teaching team. You can expect to work in close cooperation with your “Master Teacher” (the instructor of the actual class; MT). This is thus a great opportunity to learn about day-to-day aspects of the teaching profession. We rely on you, and German Studies at Dartmouth wouldn’t enjoy its success without your contribution.
Your role is to help our students hear and say German words and phrases so often that those words and phrases become automatic.
Your duties involve thorough preparation of your drill (preparing, ordering and practicing the specific drills you’ll use in a specific session), conducting that session itself (4 times per week for 50 minutes), and meeting with your MT.
You will be assigned a teaching time and a classroom for your drill session. Do not change that time or place without consulting your MT.
If you are sick or encounter another kind of emergency, it is your responsibility to contact your MT and arrange for an official substitute AT. Do not forget to inform that person of the location of your drill or to tell him or her just what drills should be covered.
If you have to switch drilling responsibilities for one session with another drill instructor, there should be no problem with payment since you are doing equivalent work. If you do not reciprocate by teaching one of that other drill instructor’s drill sessions, pay that person $20 per session.
ATs who miss drill and either do not seek a substitute or do not inform their MT may lose their position. If you are unable to find a substitute to take your place, immediately blitz all your drill students (and your MT). No student should ever be left wondering where you are!
Your students are expected to attend every session. Please keep track of their attendance and report any pattern of lateness or absence on the part of any particular student to your MT.
